BYDの軽自動車規格のEV「RACCO」は日本メーカーの脅威となるのか?/Will BYD's "RACCO" EV, developed to meet Japan's micro-car standards, pose a threat to Japanese manufacturers?

The BYD EV "RACCO" was developed in compliance with Japanese micro-car standards.
It is a "super-height wagon" with an overall height of 1,800 mm and features electric sliding doors.
Designed to suit the Japanese micro-car market, it appears the company is making a serious move to enter this segment.

The "200" model is equipped with a 22.4 kWh battery, while the "300" model features a 35.84 kWh battery; both support rapid charging at up to 50 kW.

When comparing its standard equipment to other EVs in the Japanese micro-car class, the RACCO offers features rivaling those of larger compact cars.
In addition to standard amenities found in competing models, it includes a hands-free electric sliding door system with a foot-projection guide, a 10.1-inch center monitor, a 6-way power-adjustable synthetic leather driver's seat, heated cup holders, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
It is speculated that the price for the top-tier "300 Premium" trim will come in under 18400 usd.

This article is undoubtedly a puff piece commissioned by BYD.
While one often sees this sort of content on YouTube—where it is acceptable since the creators are influencers—I cannot condone an automotive critic writing such a puff piece.

I hear it comes with a wide range of equipment, though presumably not across every trim level.
For a *kei* car costing as much as 3 million yen, that level of equipment is to be expected.
Japanese *kei* car buyers wouldn't purchase a vehicle like this.

For starters, only 14,093 units of the Nissan Sakura were registered over the full 2025 fiscal year.
In contrast, the Honda N-BOX—the top-selling tall kei wagon—sold nearly 200,000 units, even though it was at the end of its model lifecycle.

The bottom line is that there is no demand for kei-class EVs in the Japanese market.

The Suzuki Spacia, which ranked second in sales volume last fiscal year, has gained popularity thanks to its low price and extensive features; in fact, it even surpassed the N-BOX in sales during the first half of 2026.
Its greatest appeal lies in its affordability; even with the addition of a navigation system, the total cost is projected to remain just over 1.7 million yen.

In reality, many owners of these tall-style kei cars (tall wagons) are women.
Furthermore, due to a lack of charging facilities in Japanese multi-unit housing, the convenience of electric vehicles (EVs) remains extremely limited.

Given these factors, it is unlikely that a luxuriously equipped kei wagon priced above 3 million yen would gain widespread acceptance in Japan.
