Recent data from Germany's Fraunhofer Institute has revealed a significant discrepancy between the certified fuel economy figures of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and their actual real-world performance.
Manufacturers of the tested vehicles had claimed fuel consumption of just 1 to 2 liters per 100 kilometers, assuming frequent use of electric-only driving.
However, a study monitoring driving patterns and powertrain operation showed that average fuel consumption rose to approximately 6 liters per 100 kilometers—three times the promised figure.
The worst-performing model consumed 7 liters more fuel per 100 kilometers than the best model in the same segment.

The powertrain consists of a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine (producing 98 PS and 122 Nm of torque), a drive motor (197 PS, 300 Nm), and an 18.3 kWh lithium-ion battery.
It offers an EV-mode range of up to 100 km (WLTC cycle), followed by a fuel economy of 22.4 km/L during hybrid operation, with a maximum total range of 1,200 km.
However, the actual fuel economy was disappointing.
When measured using the "full-tank method," the figure came to just 11 km/L—falling significantly short of the official rated fuel economy and failing to reach even 50% of that figure.

Regarding the "BYD Sealion 6 (PHEV-FF)," the vehicle's structure makes its abysmal fuel economy perfectly understandable to me.
For any vehicle—even an electrified one—to achieve good fuel economy, there are certain non-negotiable conditions that must be met:
1. High engine thermal efficiency.
2. A simple drivetrain configuration (transmission, etc.) with minimal rotational resistance.
3. Low rolling resistance (tires, etc.).
4. Low vehicle weight.
5. Low aerodynamic drag.
No matter how advanced the mechanism, these are conditions that cannot be circumvented.
Looking at the "BYD Sealion 6" tested by WEB-CG, the only criteria it actually meets are high engine thermal efficiency and high drivetrain efficiency.
Its system is essentially equivalent to Honda's "e:HEV," though it appears to feature increased battery capacity and external charging capabilities.
The engine is likely programmed to operate within the RPM range that maximizes thermal efficiency.
Given this configuration, one might expect good fuel economy, but the vehicle is simply too heavy.
It is absurdly heavy, with a dry weight of 1,940 kg for the FF (front-wheel drive) model and 2,100 kg for the 4WD model.
A 1.5-liter engine producing 98 PS would undoubtedly struggle to cope with such mass.
Its stocky, chunky design results in a large frontal area, leading to high aerodynamic drag.
Furthermore, the tires are massive—sized 235/50 R19—necessitated by the vehicle's heavy weight. No matter how you look at it, you can't expect good fuel economy.
I occasionally come across reports online from owners regarding the fuel economy of the "BYD Sealion 6 (PHEV-FF)," but the figures are completely unreliable.
In actual driving conditions, the fuel economy is likely only about half of what is claimed in those articles.
