On the 4th, the FBI arrested Wangying "Heather" Zhang, a 34-year-old California resident, on suspicion of acting as an agent for China.
According to the FBI, the target of Zhang's surveillance was Lai Ting-yu, the eldest son of Taiwan's incumbent President, Lai Ching-te.
Lai Ting-yu currently resides in the United States.
The Office of the President of Taiwan described Zhang's actions as a "classic example of transnational repression" and expressed gratitude to the U.S. government for protecting a Taiwanese citizen.

The US FBI is steadily dismantling Chinese spy networks and neutralizing individual spies.
In contrast, Japan currently struggles to implement similar measures due to obstruction by left-wing groups—such as the Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA) and the Japan Teachers' Union (Nikkyoso)—as well as the mainstream media.
Japan has effectively become a "safe haven" for foreign spies.
These operatives infiltrate educational and political institutions, using the plausible pretext of "protecting human rights" to criticize Japan's stance toward China and foster an environment favorable to the Chinese Communist Party government.
While many nations, including China, have enacted laws to prevent espionage, Japan remains the only country without a legal framework to prohibit foreign intelligence activities or arrest those involved in them.
