On August 15—the anniversary of the end of the war—the Prime Minister performed *yōhai* (worshipping from afar) toward Yasukuni Shrine while in the parking lot of the Nippon Budokan, where he had arrived to attend the National Memorial Service for the War Dead.
Associates of the Prime Minister did not clarify whether he also performed *yōhai* in connection with the autumn grand festival that began at Yasukuni Shrine on October 18.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement declaring that a "stern protest" had been lodged with the Japanese side.
The spokesperson described Yasukuni Shrine as, in effect, a "shrine for war criminals"—given that 14 Class-A war criminals are enshrined there—and criticized the act as an "affront to historical justice" and a "provocation against the post-war international order."
South Korea’s Foreign Ministry also issued a statement, expressing "deep regret" over what it termed an "anachronistic act by those who have forgotten history." It further urged Japan’s "responsible leaders" to "face history squarely" and to "demonstrate humble introspection and sincere remorse through their actions."

While Japanese values may be difficult for people from other countries to grasp, I personally find such external criticism to be an "unwarranted interference."
According to Japanese values, even the worst of evildoers, upon death, become Buddhas.
In this sense, both the perpetrators and the victims who perished in the war are, in death, equal as Buddhas.
Regarding China, it is understandable that there would be a backlash against Japan’s rule prior to the Pacific War.
However, it should be noted that before Japan’s administration, China was already under the control of various European powers.
Following their victory in the Opium Wars against the Qing dynasty, these European nations imposed "unequal treaties"—which included the granting of extraterritoriality, the loss of tariff autonomy, the acceptance of unilateral "most-favored-nation" status,
The forced opening of ports, and the establishment of leased territories—effectively colonizing China.
Japan for its part, fought against Great Britain and wrested control of China from British influence.
Subsequently, in 1937, the Empire of Japan entered into the Second Sino-Japanese War against the Nationalist Government of the Republic of China, led by Chiang Kai-shek.
Later, the current Chinese Communist Party engaged in its own conflict against Chiang Kai-shek, eventually gaining control over mainland China.
In short, since Japan never fought a war against the current Communist-led China.
I believe the Chinese Communist Party has no grounds to celebrate "victory" in that war, nor any basis to criticize visits to Yasukuni Shrine.
