Voices of caution have begun to emerge among senior Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) figures regarding Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s long-cherished goal of cutting the consumption tax on food and beverages.
Critics argue that the proposal was not sufficiently debated within the party when it was included in the LDP’s platform for the February Lower House election.
Although Prime Minister Takaichi intends to submit the relevant legislation to the extraordinary Diet session expected this autumn, she faces the challenge of navigating difficult internal party negotiations.
********************************** My opinions *******************************
Prominent figures within Japan's Liberal Democratic Party who oppose Sanae Takaichi include lawmakers such as Shigeru Ishiba, Hiroshi Moriyama, and Yuko Obuchi.
In particular, Shigeru Ishiba—who previously served as Prime Minister—was reluctant to cut the consumption tax.
I recall him making repeatedly disingenuous remarks.
For instance, he argued that abolishing the consumption tax was impossible because it would require extensive modifications to store register systems.
At the time, his statements sparked a significant backlash on social media, with people accusing him of lying.
That said, the fact that Mr. Ishiba, Mr. Moriyama, and Ms. Obuchi were able to win election to the Diet is due entirely to public support for Prime Minister Takaichi’s policies.
One feels a sense of anger that former Prime Minister Ishiba—who lost the LDP leadership election—cannot bring himself to cooperate sincerely with Prime Minister Takaichi.
Furthermore, unless Ms. Yuko Obuchi steps down not only from her key post but also from her seat in the Diet, her sincerity will not be conveyed.
To me, she appears to be nothing more than a petty pawn in a scheme to bring down Prime Minister Takaichi.
