It has been confirmed that more than half of the total volume of rare-earth materials recovered from the deep-sea floor off Minami-Torishima—Japan's easternmost point—consists of valuable elements essential for high-tech products.
Future Challenges
・"Can equipment operate stably for extended periods at a depth of 6,000 meters?"
・"The cost of hoisting large quantities of mud"
・"Low-cost separation and refining"
・"Dewatering near the mining site"
・"Feasibility of constructing facilities for preliminary processing"
・"Assessing the impact of mining on the marine environment"
・"Issues regarding the disposal of tailings (residual soil) after mining"
Among the elements found in rare-earth deposits recovered from the deep sea off Minami-Torishima, yttrium is used in components for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and semiconductor manufacturing equipment; gadolinium serves as a neutron absorber for controlling nuclear reactors; and dysprosium is utilized in drive motors for electric vehicles.
Although rare-earth elements are vital to cutting-edge industries, reliance on China for many of them is currently high.
The value of developing these precious resources extends to economic security—specifically, safeguarding against supply disruptions—and thus cannot be measured solely by profitability.

This article lists "Yoshitaka Uchijo / Science Journalist" as the author.
Given that many articles in Japanese science and technology media lack a byline, I personally consider this a solid piece of writing based on thorough reporting.
Articles lacking an author's name often display a complete lack of accountability and poor content quality; furthermore, I frequently see them making misguided criticisms of politicians, companies, or individuals based on arbitrary judgments.
I believe that if one is going to present one's arguments in the media, one should at least include one's name.

Fundamentally, China's current dominance of the rare-earth market is the result of dumping practices driven by the Chinese Communist Party, which ignored the escalating environmental destruction involved.
It is deeply ironic that the shift to electric vehicles (EVs)—pursued in the name of environmental protection—is actually causing widespread environmental destruction, with China itself being the root cause.
As long as we continue to use Chinese rare earths—mined and refined through ongoing environmental devastation—the shift to EVs will likely lead to disastrous consequences for humanity.
For this reason, Japan must not abandon its rare-earth mining initiatives.
