流域住民が恐怖におののく「三峡ダムの決壊」／"Collapse of the Three Gorges Dam"--A Source of Terror for Residents of the River Basin

　「三峡ダム」は長江の洪水防止のための大国家プロジェクトとして建設された。

　5つの機能（発電、南水北調、水運、地域発展、洪水防止）を持たせて造られたが、長江流域の増水期に備えた洪水防止システムの役割への期待が一番大きかった。

　しかし近年、ダムの水位が147メートル程度とアナウンスしているのに、下流域でも上流域でもひどい洪水が起きている。

　30メートル分の水をため込めるはずではなかったのだろうか。

The Three Gorges Dam was constructed as a major national project aimed at flood control on the Yangtze River.

Although designed to serve five functions—power generation, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, waterborne transport, regional development, and flood control—the greatest expectation was for its role as a flood control system capable of handling the river's high-water seasons.

In recent years, however, severe flooding has occurred in both the upstream and downstream regions, even though the dam's water level is officially reported to be around 147 meters.

Wasn't the dam supposed to have the capacity to store an additional 30 meters' worth of water?

三峡ダムの下流は中国の最も都市と人口が密集している地域である。

　万が一にも「三峡ダムが決壊」すれば、被災者は少なくとも4億人以上に達し、およそ30億立方メートルの土砂が三峡ダム下流域を襲う。

　「上海までが水浸しになる」と言われている。

　大規模停電が起き、短期間では復旧不可能。

　そして長江流域は中国経済実力の40％が集中する。

　つまり中国経済も潰滅し、農業だって潰滅だ。

　回復には数年かかるだろう。

The area downstream of the Three Gorges Dam is the most densely populated and urbanized region in China.

Should the Three Gorges Dam ever fail, at least 400 million people would be affected, and approximately 3 billion cubic meters of sediment and debris would surge into the downstream areas.

It is said that the flooding would extend as far as Shanghai.

Massive power outages would occur, and restoration would be impossible in the short term.

Furthermore, the Yangtze River basin accounts for 40% of China's economic power.

In other words, the Chinese economy would be devastated, and agriculture would be ruined as well.

Recovery would likely take years.
