As of the end of June 2026, the number of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China reached 48.97 million.
By the end of 2026, the number of electric vehicles (EVs) nationwide exceeding eight years of age is projected to reach 2.6 million.
For EVs, if the battery suffers severe degradation or failure after the warranty period expires, the high cost of repairing or replacing the large-capacity drive battery becomes a major issue.
When deciding whether to continue using the vehicle, owners must weigh the vehicle's resale value against the costs of repair or replacement.
Amidst this situation, a new challenge has emerged: who will provide affordable, safe, and reliable battery repair and replacement services—with traceable maintenance histories—for the tens of millions of EVs already on the road?

With gasoline and diesel vehicles, proper and regular maintenance ensures that you won't face exorbitant repair costs when it comes time to part with the car.
While hybrid vehicles are also equipped with traction batteries, these have a smaller capacity compared to those in electric vehicles (EVs), making the cost relatively reasonable.
Above all, hybrid batteries are not subjected to extreme strain, resulting in a long lifespan; there are even vehicles still on the road after more than 20 years.
Consequently, their resale value remains very stable.
Private vehicles used in Japan are generally well-maintained and prone to fewer breakdowns; as a result, even cars that are over 20 years old are in high demand in regions such as Asia, Central and South America, and Africa, often trading at surprisingly high prices.
However, the situation is completely different for EVs.
If the battery warranty has expired or is nearing its end, or if the vehicle has exceeded the mileage limit covered by the warranty, the trade-in value offered will be far lower than the owner might expect.
This can have particularly harsh consequences for users who purchased their vehicle using a residual-value loan.
Under this type of financing, even if the residual value is set at, say, 50% of the new car price, the user is required to cover the shortfall if the vehicle's market value is lower than that amount at the time the contract ends.
EVs are generally expensive when new, often costing over 4 million yen.
For instance, if the residual value is set at 2 million yen but the used car value at the end of the term is only 1 million yen, the user must pay the 1 million yen difference in a lump sum.
If there is an unfortunate record of repairs due to a traffic accident, the trade-in value could plummet, potentially turning the situation into a nightmare.
Those considering buying an EV—perhaps swayed by YouTube videos or commercials—would do well to carefully consider resale value alongside running costs.
