Indonesia produces 67% of the nickel essential for electric vehicles (EVs).
Chinese companies effectively control the mining and processing industries there.
Locally, there is a rise in cases of tuberculosis among children.
The reality of environmental destruction caused by EVs—vehicles supposed to be clean.

Nickel—a material essential for EV batteries and a key resource for a decarbonized future.
Is being mined from the seas and soil of Indonesia.
It is a "material of the future" that underpins the shift toward a carbon-free society.
But can that future truly be called clean?
Consider the land being mined, and the landscapes, rivers, and seas that are undergoing transformation.
Indonesia today is no longer merely a supplier of raw materials.
It is evolving from a nation that simply extracts resources into one that refines them, negotiates terms, and takes the lead.
Yet, the greater the success, the deeper the shadows.

Who is reaping the profits?
Who is bearing the environmental costs?
And is decarbonization truly the right path forward?

Ever since the "EV shift" began in Europe, this blog has consistently argued that the transition to electric vehicles contributes nothing to combating global warming.
To the average person who does not look deeply into the matter, EVs appear very clean because they emit no exhaust fumes while driving.
However, the reality is quite different.

Driving an EV over long distances requires a massive battery.
The production of these batteries is causing ongoing environmental destruction around the world.
Deforestation is accelerating global warming.
Environmental damage is occurring through the release of hazardous dust and radioactive materials into the air, soil, rivers, and oceans during rare-earth mining.
Furthermore, the health and livelihoods of local communities are being devastated.

Has global greenhouse gas emission actually decreased since the "EV shift" began?
Has global warming stopped?
In reality, it appears that global warming has rapidly accelerated since around 2010, when the shift to EVs started.

Those who lack the capacity for critical analysis continue to believe only in the "clean" image of EVs.
They trust information that is biased and tainted by the money of legacy media.
The same applies to Japan; the government continues to provide massive subsidies for EVs.
Huge amounts of tax revenue are being poured into charging infrastructure.
If EVs become widespread and start driving in large numbers across Japan, new power plants will be required to generate the electricity needed to run them.
Moreover, the evolution of AI is expected to drive a massive surge in electricity demand.
Japan simply does not have the surplus electricity to power EVs—vehicles that do nothing to help with global warming.

Japan is also heavily burdened by the legacy of the Fukushima nuclear accident, making it difficult to increase the number of nuclear power plants. Furthermore, the disposal of nuclear waste continues to be deferred.
In addition, deforestation and environmental destruction caused by wind and solar power plants have become major issues, meaning these facilities cannot be expanded any further.
Increasing the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on the road in the future will require more thermal power plants.
This will result in a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions.
While the rest of the world is moving away from the shift toward EVs, the Japanese government is heading in completely the wrong direction.

It is not high-performance, large-scale electric vehicles (EVs) that will halt global warming.
Rather, what matters is for each of us to minimize our energy consumption.
Since Japan possesses the necessary technology, the government needs to fundamentally transform transportation infrastructure and urban planning to enhance energy efficiency, rather than simply pushing blindly for a shift to EVs.
