Here is a brief summary of remarks made by Representative "Yana", who was elected via the proportional representation system for the North Kanto Block in the last election. (See the link above for the full text.)
"We made significant cuts to the road budgets for Nasukarasuyama City and Nakagawa Town for the 2026 fiscal year.
One of the reasons for this is that the local heads of government took actions indicating they did not need a Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lawmaker.
Since many citizens and residents made the same judgment, it is only natural that the budget was reduced."
"I told them quite bluntly: if you don't rely on me—if you decide you don't need me—and choose to support independent candidates instead, then why do you accept the contracts for projects funded by the budget I secured?"

This lawmaker seems to possess the mindset typical of a politician from a rural area.
Regarding the TV coverage of this incident, another lawmaker who heard the remarks at the social gathering stated in an interview, "I thought what Mr. Yanagi said was only natural".
This suggests that such behavior might be considered standard practice within Tochigi's 3rd District.
In any case, Mr. Yanagi could well become the Achilles' heel of the Takaichi administration.
He should either voluntarily resign from his ministerial post or be dismissed immediately—well before the upcoming budget deliberations.
The opposition parties appear to be swiftly preparing questions regarding this situation in an effort to corner the Takaichi administration.
If that happens, the crucial budget deliberations will likely be neglected, ultimately hindering the policies the Takaichi administration seeks to advance.
